
The Rincon de la Vieja is an active volcano situated in the Cordillera de Guanacaste. At the present, this volcano has only fumarole activity and hot springs. With 14,083 ha, the adjacent park protects diverse habitats produced by the differences in altitude (from 650 to 1965 m), rainfall, the effect of volcanic eruptions and the degree of slope. Plants include the cupey and the poor man's umbrella. Observed number of bird species is 357, including Highland Tinamou, Black Guan, Bellbird, and Elegant Trogon. The tapir, northern Ttmandua, monkeys and even jaguars are some mammals to be found in the park.
